A 23-year-old man was charged Tuesday with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and two DUI counts for a crash near Marina del Rey last month that killed a Georgia firefighter who was on vacation with some of his colleagues.

Benjamin Albert Seider pleaded not guilty to the three felony counts stemming from the April 10 death of Ron Herens and the injuries to two of his fellow firefighters. He could face more than 12 years in state prison if convicted as charged.

Herens, 23, of Powder Springs, Georgia, died at the scene of the April 10 crash at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Washington Boulevard. A couple in a third car involved in the collision escaped injury.

Herens was on vacation with four fellow Marietta firefighters and was in a car with two of them when their vehicle was T-boned in an intersection by the suspected DUI driver who ran a red light, according to Marietta Fire Chief Jackie Gibbs.
“He will be much missed by this department,” Gibbs said of Herens, whom he described as “always smiling.” “Everybody here thought the world of Ron Herens,” he said. “All the wind is knocked out of us right now.”

Police today sought public help to find a hit-and-run motorist involved in the death of a pedestrian in Van Nuys.

The 28-year-old man — identified by the coroner’s office as John Yonko, whose place of residence was unknown — was fatally injured at 12:05 a.m. Sunday on Sepulveda Boulevard north of Vanowen Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He died at the scene, authorities said.
The victim was initially struck by a dark-colored, four-door sedan going northbound on Sepulveda Boulevard, and then was struck by a Metro bus, which remained at the scene. The car kept going.

A standing reward of up to $50,000, offered by the Los Angeles City Council, is in effect for information that helps police solve a hit-and-run case.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Valley Traffic Division Detective William Bustos at (818) 644-8021, or (877) LAPD-247.

Northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway were temporarily closed Saturday morning, April 29,  after a deadly crash, and a driver was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 3:30 a.m. at Century Boulevard on the northbound side of the freeway, according to CHP. One of the cars involved burst into flames.

A person died at the scene, CHP said. It was not immediately clear if that person was outside of his or her vehicle, or if the person was ejected. CHP said a driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. What led up to the crash was not immediately clear.

The crash prompted the closure of all northbound lanes near LAX early Saturday morning. Three northbound lanes remained closed just before 8 a.m. for the investigation, but all lanes were reopened later Saturday morning, CHP said.

A second crash snarled traffic on the southbound side of the freeway in that same area early Saturday morning, a county fire dispatcher said. Two people were taken to hospitals from that crash, which involved four cars.

The southbound lanes, which were first closed at 4:41 a.m., were re-opened at 7:58 a.m., according to CHP Officer Dion Conley.

FULLERTON – It was an odd sight: A huge 18-wheeler, its cab crumpled, wedged into a two-story building.

All morning on Sunday, dozens of neighbors at the North Hills apartment complex stood outside the yellow caution tape gawking at the scene, snapping photos and sharing experiences.

The Volvo tractor-trailer crashed into the building shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday, police said.

“I thought it was an earthquake,” said Josefina Estrada, who was asleep when the truck rammed into her family’s second-floor apartment.

The truck’s driver, a 44-year-old man, and his female passenger 42, were transported to UCI Medical Center with serious injuries, said Kathy Schaefer, division chief for the Fullerton Fire Department.

Five apartments in the North Hills apartment complex were evacuated and deemed uninhabitable, Fullerton Police Sgt. Jon Radus said.

Estrada, 40, said she had minor injuries from drywall falling on her. She was treated at the scene for bruising on her right side.

Cristian, her 18-year-old son, ran from his bed to check on his mother and his sister Crystal, 2, who slept in the same room. “I seriously was in shock,” he said. “I didn’t know what was going on. The only thing that registered was that I had to get to my mom.”

The toddler was uninjured but began crying because of her mother’s screams, Cristian said.

His sister Adilene Estrada, 13, and brother Jesus Estrada, 16, also live there. The corner of the apartment where Jesus sleeps was completely taken out. Fortunately, Jesus spent the night with a cousin Saturday.

“I wouldn’t be talking to you right now if I had slept in my own bed,” he said.

A 40-year-old man in the damaged complex also had minor injuries, Radus said.

Radus said the initial investigation shows the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound within the posted speed limit on the 600 block of the Imperial Highway. The truck suddenly veered from the No. 3 lane, struck the south curb, and hit the apartment building, causing “major structural damage.”

The complex stretches along Imperial Highway between Puente Street and Harbor Boulevard. The truck is labeled Bhandal Bros., of Hollister in Northern California.

Andy Castro-Aguilera, who lives in the complex, initially thought the accident was a street collision.

“I’m CPR certified so I ran out to see if I could help,” he said.

The truck driver, who was lying on the ground outside the cab, apparently had fainted, Castro-Aguilera said.

“I felt for his pulse and vitals,” he said. Then the man suddenly opened his eyes and, sounding panicked, Castro-Aguilera said, asked, “Where’s my girlfriend?”

Schaefer with the Fullerton Fire Department said occupants of the smashed unit were “very, very lucky.”

“It’s a miracle that no one inside the building was seriously hurt,” she said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the collision should contact Fullerton Police Accident Investigator Corporal S. Bailor at (714) 738-6813. Anonymous callers can contact Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1(855) TIP-OCCS or www.occrimestoppers.org.
