FOOTHILL RANCH – A 28-year- old Lake Forest man died after he lost control of his Toyota Tacoma, launched off the 214 toll road, just north of Bake Parkway, and was ejected around 9 p.m. on Sunday, authorities said.
John Weathers was traveling northbound on the 241 when, for unknown reasons, he swerved right and ran off the east side of the roadway, said California Highway Patrol officer Patrick Bourassa. “The pickup struck an ascending dirt embankment causing it to become airborne, subsequently ejecting the driver,” Bourassa said.
The truck landed in an adjacent parking lot in the 26000 block of Town Center Drive. It struck a fire hydrant, several parked vehicles and two pedestrians; Jeffery Werkmeister, 50, of Lake Forest and an unnamed 3-year- old, also from Lake Forest, Bourassa said.
Both pedestrians were taken by ambulance to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with “major injuries,” Bourassa said. Weathers was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the incident is under investigation, but based on preliminary findings, neither drugs or alcohol appear to be a factor, Bourassa said.
