A man who escaped his wrecked vehicle after a crash on the 91 Freeway was killed early Friday morning

A man who escaped his wrecked vehicle after a crash on the 91 Freeway was killed early Friday morning, March 17, after he was then struck by at least two other vehicles.

The California Highway Patrol received a report of a crash in the eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of Spruce Street about 2:10 a.m., when, for reasons that still aren’t clear to investigators, the man made veered left from a right-hand lane into the center divider, said Officer Dan Olivas.

He exited the vehicle and crawled away from the destroyed car, according to the Riverside Fire Department. He stood on the east side of the car, leaving oncoming traffic behind him and the vehicle, Olivas said. That’s when another vehicle, unable to stop, crashed into the wrecked car, sending the vehicle propelling toward the man.

The second vehicle was severely damaged and the woman inside escaped before it caught fire, said Riverside Fire Battalion Chief Tony Perna. She was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

A third vehicle came and swerved to miss the crash, but ran over the man lying in the road, Olivas said.  A news release from the Fire Department says several vehicles struck the man before their arrival. He was dead by the time firefighters arrived, Perna said.

The freeway was closed, but re-opened by 5:30 a.m., according to CHP incident logs.
