Freeway Multi-Vehicle Collision Causes Fatalities

In the early hours on Saturday, July 9, 2016, a multi vehicle collision tragically killed a 33-year- old man and his two children prompting the closure of the 91 freeway in Artesia. Early reports state that Lavell Mann was driving a red Jeep when it collided with the rear of a gas tanker truck while traveling westbound on SR-91 near the Pioneer Blvd. exit. The collision caused the vehicle carrying Mann, his wife and two children to spin out of control, collide into the center median and flip over onto its roof. Another vehicle traveling in the carpool lane then slammed into the jeep while it was upside down. When paramedics arrived, Mann, his 3-year-old daughter and nine-month old son were pronounced deceased at the scene. Niya Mann was the sole survivor inside the jeep but lost her entire family in the collision. California Highway Patrol officers familiar with the investigation state that the Jeep’s excess speed may have played a role in the crash.
