Man killed early Sunday when he crashed into the back of a charter bus

A man was killed early Sunday ( November 13, 2016 ) when he crashed into the back of a charter bus carrying a college basketball team in Chino Hills, sparking a fire, KTLA reported. The fiery crash occurred around 1:26 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the 71 Freeway, near the Grand Avenue exit, the station reported. The man was driving a Volkswagen Jetta and hit the back of the bus. A passerby stopped to help pull driver out of the Jetta, which caught fire, authorities said. The driver was treated by paramedics and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Bernardino County coroner’s office identified him as Xujun Lu, 26, of Chino Hills. The charter bus was carrying 18 members of the San Diego Christian College basketball team, who were returning from a game in Bakersfield. No injuries were reported to the basketball players or the bus driver, the station said.

The charter bus accident comes three weeks after a fatal bus crash near Palm Springs left 13 people dead and 31 others injured on Oct. 23. Authorities said the charter bus had crashed into the back of a big rig truck. In August, five people were killed and several others were seriously injured when a charter bus struck a pole near an exit on Highway 99 in Merced County. The cause of Sunday’s crash in Chino Hills remains under investigation, authorities said.
